When we set out camera to P (Program) or Auto the camera will select the best (it thinks) apertures and shutter speeds. But what if we want to freeze movement – for example to a swishing cane?

When something in your photograph is moving a slower shutter speed will allow it to blur as the movement continues during the exposure. Faster shutter speeds may freeze the motion; depending on how fast the object is going. See Beginners Guide to Spanking Photography

You should also consider that we humans tend not to hold cameras very steady. For example a well bound model is not going to move much but if the camera moves during the exposure the picture will still be blurred. This effect is called camera shake and is even more pronounced with telephoto lenses. The average person can hold a camera steady at around 1/60 or 1/30 sec

We can set the shutter speed we want by selecting TV (Time Variable) or S (Shutter Priority) on older cameras. The higher you move up the scale 1/125 1/250 1/500 the faster the shutter on your camera opens and closes and the more it appears to freeze movement.

You might want to create blur for effect in which case slow the shutter speed down 1/30 1/15 1/8 How much depends on how fast the subject is moving. Experiment.

The camera then meters the light and controls the aperture to maintain the correct exposure for our selected shutter speed. The camera may warn you when it has run out of aperture to maintain the correct exposure or display a red shaking hand when the shutter speed is too low. It is often possible to take photographs at quite low shutter speeds if you hold the camera correctly, brace yourself against something solid or rest the camera on something.
